Shankar Arumugavelu

Shankar Arumugavelu is the senior vice president and chief information officer for Verizon, a leading provider of 4G wireless, fiber-optic broadband and global IP network services. He is responsible for the company’s Information Technology strategy, architecture, development and management of the information systems portfolio, continued evolution of digital platforms, and operation of all supporting infrastructure.

Before being named to his current position in February 2015, Arumugavelu served as senior vice president and chief information officer for Verizon Wireless. Previously, Arumugavelu was the senior vice president and chief information officer for Verizon’s consumer and mass business group.

Prior to this, Arumugavelu has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility at Verizon and its predecessor companies. Immediately before his chief information officer assignment, he was senior vice president, Network Operations Support Systems for Verizon Telecom. He was responsible for systems  strategy, architecture, design, development, implementation and maintenance of engineering, service provisioning, service assurance, workforce management, dispatch, testing, surveillance and performance management systems for voice, data, video, special access and new generation communication services.

Arumugavelu began his career at GTE Data Services in 1997 as a Member of Technical Staff in the Enterprise Systems Group and advanced to increasing levels of responsibility in IT. In 1998 he was named Chief Architect of the group and was responsible for the design, development and maintenance of GTE’s service provisioning system.  He was elevated to Executive Director of the Provisioning and Activation Systems group in 2002.

Arumugavelu was recognized as one of the “Premier 100 IT Leader” by Computerworld in 2014.

Arumugavelu is a graduate of the University of South Florida and holds bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.
